Decorative Vase

Anybody else tired of the same ol' glass vase? I actually saw something similar at a spa recently but wasn't able to find it in any stores. So I thought it would be easy enough to recreate. Here's my latest update to a simple square hurricane vase.

Materials:
Vase ~ a square or rectangle would probably be the easiest
2 scrap pieces of wood
Tea candle
Filler ~ rocks, sand, etc
Stain or paint
1-1/2" drill bit
2 screws

First, measure the top sides of your vase. One board will need to be cut with an extra 1/4" on each side. You'll need to remove 1/4" for each side on the 2nd board.
For example; my vase measures 3"x4" so the top board was cut to 3.5"x4.5".
My bottom board was 2.5"x3.5".
Center your boards together and drill 2 holes on either side.
Make sure they are far enough apart to drill a 1-1/2" hole in the middle
for your candle
Place some wood glue between your boards
Get a paper towel handy for the next step
Use two small screws {the size depends on the thickness of your boards}. These were scrap pieces from a 1" board {so actually 3/4"}. I used 1-1/4" screws to hold the boards together
Use the paper towel to wipe away any extra glue that squeezes out between the boards
I checked to make sure everything fit snuggly on the vase.
Find the center of your top board
Grab your 1-1/2" drill bit and drill into the top board about 1/4" to 1/2" deep.
It helps if you have a clamp to hold it in place
Almost done!
I went with a Dark Walnut Stain but use whatever you'd like; a stain, some paint, leave it as is...
Now fill the vase with whatever you'd like. I went with a few big rocks. It matches my Custom Side Table now.

You're all set!
