What Is the Best Paper for Paper Embroidery?

Not all paper works well for stitching.

Here’s what to look for:

✔ Medium Cardstock (#60–80 lb)

Strong enough to hold stitches
Flexible enough not to crack

✔ Smooth Surface

Makes punching holes easier.

❌ Avoid:

  • Thin printer paper

  • Textured watercolor paper

  • Extremely thick cardstock

If the paper is too thin, it tears. Too thick, and it becomes hard to stitch through.

For greeting cards, 5x7 blank cards work beautifully. For framing, 5x5 cardstock is a great size for beginners.

If you're just starting, beginner-friendly printable patterns are available in my Etsy Shop. They're designed with proper hole spacing to prevent tearing and frustration.
