How to Choose DMC Colors for Floral Embroidery
Choosing colors can feel overwhelming — but it doesn’t have to be.
Here’s a simple approach:
🌿 Step 1: Choose Your Stem Color
Classic greens like 703 or 470 work well.
🌸 Step 2: Pick a Focal Flower Color
Choose one dominant shade (pink, coral, lavender).
🌼 Step 3: Add a Contrast Accent
A darker or lighter shade creates depth.
🎀 Step 4: Consider Neutrals
Soft browns or creams can add ribbon or detail elements.
You don’t need dozens of colors. Many beginner floral patterns use just 2–3 shades.
If you’d prefer a curated color guide, my printable embroidery templates include DMC numbers so you don’t have to guess.

***While I'm thrilled to share my step-by-step directions, the good and the bad, these are intended for your personal use. I'm always happy to hear and see what my bloggers have been working on. BUT a lot of work goes into these creations and while I have no issues sharing so you are able to create the work for your precious homes please understand that selling an exact duplication of my designs is highly frowned upon. :( Please always be considerate of another artists work. Thank you!***
